TR36W4: The specimen comes from a little-known locality for cinnabars of this quality.
In this case, it forms isolated aggregates on matrix, consisting of small, twinned, acute rhombohedral crystals that are transparent, bright, and have a very intense red color.

EF56AM2: Floater doubly terminated Beryl crystal (variety heliodor), with good terminal faces at the upper end, polycrystalline growths at the opposite end, and very marked growth forms (“edged”) on the prism faces. Transparent, very lustrous and with an intense yellow color. An European classic.

EY53Y8: Transparent and bright floater crystal with intense yellow color and showing the typical etched surfaces rich in very well defined dissolution forms.

SK47AD3: Aggregate of very Sharp rhombohedral Siderite crystals, with polycrystalline growths and a single cubic Fluorite crystal, transparent and with a blue color and violet color zones. We note the locality which is really uncommon.
The sample is from the Francesco S. Stoppani collection (catalog number 0614), and was previously in the J.H. Marshall Jr. collection (catalog number 2640). We'll send to the buyer the Stoppani label and the label and card from the Marshall Jr. collection. As is the case with so many specimens in this collection, the sample is of great quality for the locality.

TTA100XXX: Spherical aggregates formed by laminar crystals of Baryte forming bundles with very intense luster and deep, uniform brown-cream tones, accompanied by groups of yellowish Sulphur crystals in a beautiful color contrast.

The specimen comes from the Eastern Carpathian area in Ukraine, a Neogene sedimentary basin recognized for its extensive Miocene evaporite deposits, in which potassic, magnesian and borate salt deposits are prominent.

MRA69XXX: Lanceolate crystals of dark deep green and lustrous Vivianite, aesthetically disposed on the complete half of the shell of a fossil bivalve from the Kerch Peninsula, near the Black Sea in Ukraine.
The fossil itself has provided phosphate and calcium for the development of these Vivianite crystals.

IRELAND


Calcite with Pyrite inclusions

 

TBU64XXX: Calcite crystal characteristic of this locality, well developed, with a rhombohedral habit and sharp faces and edges, translucent and with a soft yellowish tone. It presents numerous Pyrite inclusions distributed irregularly inside the crystal, generating a visual effect of dark points that contrast with the translucent Calcite. With good luster and balanced aesthetic.

In this area of limestones of southwestern Ireland, the mineralization develops in a carbonate sedimentary context, where the circulation of calcium-rich fluids has allowed the precipitation of Calcite in cavities and small fractures, generating well-defined crystals and, occasionally, bright aggregates. This type of paragenesis is characteristic of low-temperature processes associated with the circulation of fluids in carbonate rocks.

TPT67XXX: Globular groups of Wavellite formed by acicular crystals arranged in a fibrous-radial manner and with a very dark and uniform green color, slightly lighter at the base of the crystals and with others that are more whitish. The specimen, a historical one, dates from the 19th century and is accompanied by a Ralph Sutcliffe label with the complete pedigree of the piece.

The region belongs to the Southwest Irish Basin geological belt, dominated by Paleozoic rocks—mainly slates, greywackes, and limestones—deformed during the Variscan cycle. In some ancient fractures and cavities, secondary mineralizations occur, including Prehnite, generally associated with low-temperature hydrothermal processes linked to dikes and veins formed after the deformation.

TFR74AQ1: Calcite crystals, many of them doubly terminated and one of them clearly dominant and very aerial, with a prism with slightly curved edges and pinacoidal terminations, transparent, lustrous, on matrix, with Baryte.
The specimen is of much higher quality than usual in this mine, and comes from the collection of William Severance, previously in that of Clarence Bement.

TA17H6: A classic actually really difficult to obtain. Crystals are formed by faces of cube and octahedron and they are preserved exceptionally bright on the matrix of small Quartz crystals.

TY99AE9: Aggregate of complex Calcite crystals, very rich in faces, with a predominant scalenohedron and a terminal rhombohedron. They are colorless, clear and very bright but have deep red Hematite inclusions in some parts of the sample. This one, an English classic, is from the Buck Keller collection, whose label we’ll send to the buyer.

MD16AL6: Druse of complex Calcite crystals with dominant scalenohedron faces, transparent, shiny, and with reddish inclusions of Hematite. A great English classic, really old and with an unusual pedigree, with two labels that detail much of its history.
It came from the collection of Francis Butler, who in 1890 sold it to the British Museum in London, which gave it the collection number BM65723, after which it passed on to the Leif Engman collection.

EPR16AO1: Druse with water-clear Calcite crystals, with the dominant forms of the prism and very acute scalenohedral terminations, sharp and very lustrous. An excellent English classic, both for the morphology and for the deposit.
The specimen is accompanied by a very old label from the Comptoir Central d'Histoire Naturelle, a business founded by the naturalist Nerée Boubée (1806-1862) in Paris, and has several collection numbers and an old label with the number 325 glued to its back.

T48AF6: Different is the best word to desire this one, with the classic cubic crystallization of UK Fluorites but a yellow color and unusual hints. It also comes from a locality that is not well known, as one sees few specimens from it.

E91AC7: Cumbria, British Museum, Baryte, these are all names that remind me of a splendid past. Jordi bought this one from the Behier collection but did not put it up on the web site as the base has a small ding. But given that you cannot see this defect when you display it and that it is such a nice specimen that displays well I think that it would look good in any collection.
As well as the history I like the fact that it has its old labels and that not only are the crystals transparent but that they have two colors, due, Jordi tells me, to the Hematite inclusions in certain areas which add the red tint.

TB81F9: Baryte form Egremont is considered as a classic among the classics. The crystal has tabular form and the blue color typical for the pieces of that deposit. The clear color contrasts nicely with the red of the iron oxides, also included along the edges.
It’s a piece with a wide “pedigree” reflected by the labels, one of them from the U.S. National Museum.

EFB96ASN3: Lenticular Hematite crystals of a deep black color, extraordinarily shiny, to the point that they produce flashes with incident light, intergrown on a matrix of massive bands of Hematite as well. The isolated Quartz crystals are clearer than usual for this locality and are well-formed, with minimal prism development.
A true classic of English mineralogy, originating from the ancient iron mines of the Cumbria district.

TBL27AP4: Group of Quartz crystals with the characteristic morphology of this classic deposit, doubly terminated and with little development of the prism faces. They are translucent, lustrous, and have coatings of lamellar Hematite crystals and inclusions of the same mineral with an intense red color. They are associated with small white Calcite crystals.

TCD91XXX: Group of small Pyromorphite crystals, well individualized and arranged in a relatively isolated way on a Quartz matrix. They have a striking very bright yellow color, which strongly contrasts with the white of the matrix. The crystals, with defined habit, are distributed in a dispersed manner, allowing their morphology to be clearly appreciated.

Roughton Gill is an old mining area that forms part of the historic mining district of Caldbeck Fells, well known since the 18th century for its exceptional mineral diversity and for producing many classic specimens highly valued by collectors.

Geologically, the mineralization occurs there in hydrothermal veins cutting Ordovician volcanic and volcanosedimentary rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. These veins mainly host lead and zinc mineralization with numerous secondary minerals developed in the oxidation zone. TRM44XXX: Growths of Plumbogummite of intense sky-blue color, partially covered by small growths of bright yellow Mimetite and accompanied by white Baryte crystals. The strong contrast contributes greatly to the specimen.
The specimen also has a fine historical pedigree: ex Trevor Bridges, ex Lindsay Greenbank and ex Harry Critchley, three names very well known among collectors of classic British minerals.
Geologically, its mineral association is noteworthy, typical of supergene alteration environments rich in lead and arsenic, developed on a very compact massive Quartz matrix.

Dry Gill Mine is a classic locality situated in the well-known Caldbeck Fells mining area in northern England, famous for the great diversity and rarity of its secondary mineral species. The mineralization is related to lead-, copper- and arsenic-rich hydrothermal veins hosted in rocks associated with the Skiddaw granite massif and its metamorphic aureole. Dry Gill is especially renowned among collectors for secondary phosphate minerals such as Plumbogummite, formed by supergene alteration processes affecting primary lead- and aluminium-rich minerals under highly oxidizing conditions.

Connellite & Brochantite (variety enysite)

 

TVF82XXX: Aggregate of Connellite and Brochantite forming a very characteristic coating, with botryoidal development and undulating surfaces that generate irregular reliefs and shallow cavities. Connellite appears with more intense bluish-green tones, concentrated in lower areas and in small cavities, while Brochantite dominates in lighter green tones, with a more matte aspect and more extensively covering the matrix. The chromatic contrast between both species, together with the complexity of the surface, provides great visual richness to the whole.
Worth noting is the rarity of this association and the fact that it comes from a classic locality. An uncommon specimen.

Polberro Mines is a small historic mine located in the Saint Agnes area, within one of Cornwall’s classic mining districts. It belongs to the network of workings developed along the St Agnes vein system, known for tin and copper mineralization and for a wide variety of well-crystallized secondary species.

Geologically, the mineralization is related to hydrothermal systems associated with the Hercynian granitic intrusions of Cornwall. The veins, typically trending E–W, are hosted in metasedimentary and granitic rocks, with a typical paragenesis including Cassiterite, Chalcopyrite and other sulfides, accompanied by secondary minerals formed in oxidation zones.

MBB96XXX: Aggregate of Cassiterite crystals, well defined, with sharp faces and edges and good luster, forming a group on the micaceous matrix. The crystals show dark tones, but with transparent internal reflections on the growth surfaces. The specimen displays the classic aesthetics of the locality.
Old specimen from the Rodolphe Schmid collection (Switzerland), which adds historical interest to the piece.

From a geological point of view, the area belongs to the Hercynian granitic domain of Cornwall, with granitic intrusions that generated hydrothermal vein systems rich in tin. These veins, hosted in the surrounding metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, gave rise to the formation of Cassiterite in cavities and fractures, frequently associated with micas and other minerals typical of moderate- to low-temperature pneumatolytic-hydrothermal environments.

Ladywash Mine is a former mining operation located near Eyam. It is a classic locality well known among collectors for its lead and zinc minerals, especially from the oxidation zone.

From a geological point of view, the mineralization occurs within the Derbyshire orefield, characterized by low-temperature hydrothermal veins hosted in Carboniferous limestones. These veins, locally known as 'rakes', gave rise to minerals such as Fluorite, Galena, Sphalerite and their alteration products, with frequent associations of secondary species in cavities and fractures formed by oxidation processes.

TPR41XXX: A group of cubic Fluorite crystals, with an intense purple colour and good luster, partly covered by groups of Baryte crystals showing an uncommon crystal habit for the species. The contrast between the intense colour of the Fluorite and the cream-coloured Baryte gives the specimen a distinctive appearance.

This specimen comes from Dirtlow Rake, one of the classic localities of the Castleton mining district. Geologically, Dirtlow Rake is a major hydrothermal vein hosted by the Carboniferous limestones of the White Peak. The Fluorite-Baryte association represents one of the characteristic stages of the mineralization, formed by the circulation of hydrothermal fluids rich in fluorite and barium through fractures in the host rock.

TBM71XXX: Group of Fluorite of the blue john variety, showing the characteristic concentric bands of yellowish and violet colours that have made this material famous throughout the world. The specimen displays a compact and well-defined structure, clearly showing the alternation of colour zones produced during the different stages of growth. A particularly interesting detail is the presence, on the upper part of the specimen, of small, well-individualized Fluorite crystals, a not very common feature that adds additional mineralogical interest to a material usually appreciated mainly for its ornamental value.

Geologically, Fluorite var. blue john formed through the crystallization of Fluorite in cavities and fractures within the Carboniferous limestones of the Castleton district. The characteristic colour bands reflect variations in the physicochemical conditions of the mineralizing fluids during the growth of the mineral.

TXL92XXX: Group of crystals with good definition and well-developed faces, arranged in an aesthetic way on the matrix, with a very airy growth that enhances their individuality and gives lightness to the whole.
The Rampgill Mine is An important historic lead mine located in the Nenthead mining district, one of the classic mining areas of northern England. Active since at least the 18th century, it was one of the most extensive and productive mines in the region, developed along major veins such as the Rampgill vein and related structures.

Geologically, the mineralization is hosted in Carboniferous rocks, mainly within the ‘Great Limestone’, one of the most mineralized horizons of the Alston Moor orefield. These rocks are cut by a network of mineralized faults with dominant ENE–WSW and NNW–SSE trends, controlling the development of veins and replacement bodies (‘flats’) in the limestone host rocks.
The paragenesis is complex and characteristic: early cavity formation was followed by Quartz and Sphalerite, then Fluorite and Galena, and later by barium and carbonate minerals such as Baryte, Witherite and Barytocalcite, with widespread replacement processes and pseudomorphs between these species.

TA91AJ4: Rosette growths of lenticular Barytocalcite crystals with curved edges. They are on a matrix with gray, very sharp lenticular Calcite crystals. The Barytocalcite has a white color and appears as pseudomorphs or perimorphs coating old Baryte crystals.
The sample, an English classic, is from the John H. Marshall Jr. collection (num. 536), whose card and label, and with a previous label of the Lindsday Greenbank collection, both of which we will send to the buyer. We will also send a copy of the analysis that disproves the wrong perception of Lindsay and John that the white crystals are Witherite when they are really Barytocalcite.

TTA81XXX: Group of pale yellow-greenish cubic Fluorite crystals, partially coated by small Quartz crystals and accompanied by Pyrite crystals. Although the Fluorite–Quartz–Pyrite association is relatively common at the Cambokeels Mine, the main interest of the specimen lies in the presence of black Cronstedtite coatings, especially visible on one of the lateral areas of the piece. This association is much less common and provides an unusual aesthetic and mineralogical contrast.

Geologically, the Fluorite, Quartz and Pyrite formed during the main hydrothermal episodes of the deposit. The Cronstedtite corresponds to a later iron-rich phase, developed locally on the surface of the pre-existing crystals, generating the characteristic dark coatings visible on the specimen.

TCD44XXX: Floating group of cubic Fluorite crystals, very complete and with no noticeable damage. Particularly noteworthy are their bluish-green colour and the remarkable transparency of many of the crystals, with bright and well-defined faces.
This is an old specimen, from July 1997, which belonged to George J. Wilson and was later acquired by Harry Critchley.
A particularly attractive feature of the specimen is its intense fluorescence, accompanied by a marked colour change, perceptible even under different daylight conditions, a characteristic highly appreciated in Fluorites from this locality.

Geologically, these Fluorites crystallized from fluorine-rich hydrothermal fluids that circulated through fractures developed in the Carboniferous limestones of Weardale.

Fluorite with Siderite

 

TRM32XXX: Fluorite crystals on a Siderite matrix that has acquired an intense reddish colour as a result of oxidation. The matrix displays cavities and dissolution features that appear to correspond to former crystals, probably of a carbonate, now completely dissolved, whose arrangement suggests an epitactic growth relationship with the Siderite.
The contrast between the lilac Fluorite, with its paler zones, and the altered Siderite gives the specimen a very distinctive appearance.

Geologically, Greenlaws Mine forms part of the hydrothermal vein system of the North Pennines Orefield, hosted by Carboniferous carbonate and clastic rocks. The association of Fluorite and Siderite reflects a fluorine- and carbonate-rich hydrothermal stage, followed by oxidation processes that partly modified the matrix and produced its present reddish colours.

TXM61XXX: A group of light violet Fluorite crystals, well arranged on the matrix and displaying a particularly attractive luminosity. The crystals show well-defined faces and form a balanced group, leaving part of the Galena matrix visible and partially covered by abundant Cerussite crystals. Although the Cerussite occurs as small crystals, its presence is notable and adds further mineralogical interest to the specimen, which combines an elegant appearance with a delicate color.

The Fluorite and Cerussite formed in the oxidation zone of the deposit. The Cerussite resulted from the alteration of primary lead minerals and is a characteristic association in this type of mineralization, although it does not always occur as abundantly as in this specimen.

Smithsonite coating Baryte and with Fluorite

 

TVR7XXX: A group of tabular Baryte crystals almost completely coated by a fine layer of cream-colored Smithsonite crystals, which perfectly preserves the morphology of the original Baryte crystals. Small pale violet Fluorite crystals appear on one side of the specimen.
It is interesting to observe Smithsonite from Coldstones in this habit, coating Baryte crystals, which gives the Smithsonite a certain aesthetic quality, as it usually has an earthy appearance at this locality.

The Smithsonite formed in the oxidation zone of the deposit through the alteration of primary zinc minerals, whereas the Baryte and Fluorite belong to the original hydrothermal mineralization.

TFG170XXX: A group of cubic Pyrite crystals, of good size for the locality, lustrous and with well-defined faces. The specimen stands out for the excellent preservation of the crystals, better than is usually seen in specimens of this type from the Hilston beaches.

Geologically, Pyrite formed by precipitation from iron- and sulfur-rich fluids during the diagenesis of marine sediments. Subsequent erosion of the Holderness coastal cliffs released these mineralized nodules.

TRB72XXX: Group of good-quality Goethite crystals, clearly superior to those usually found at this quarry, partially covering a matrix of Quartz crystals with Calcite. It comes from two British collections, first that of Graham Morse and later that of Harry Critchley, a provenance that adds historical significance to the specimen.

Geologically, Whatley Quarry exploits a thick succession of Lower Carboniferous limestones in the Mendip Hills. The mineralization occurs in fractures and cavities within the limestone, formed and reactivated during the Variscan deformation. Goethite is a secondary mineral, whereas the Quartz crystallized in cavities associated with the circulation of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids.

TFF12XXX: Specimen in which the excellent state of preservation of the Pyrite and Calcite stands out, both with good luster and without visible damage. The Pyrite forms aggregates of crystals partially covered by white Calcite crystals. On the surface of the Pyrite, small Sphalerite crystals are present, adding interest to the specimen.

From a geological point of view, this type of association is characteristic of sedimentary and diagenetic environments in Jurassic limestones, where fluids rich in iron, sulfur and, sometimes, zinc precipitate sulfides such as Pyrite and Sphalerite, later accompanied by carbonates such as Calcite.

Hampstead Quarry is located in the Cotswolds area, known for its outcrops of Jurassic limestones (mainly Lower and Middle), with typical oolitic facies. These limestones may show cavities and fractures where secondary mineralizations develop, mainly carbonates and sulphur and iron oxides, within a shallow marine sedimentary context.

Baryte on Calcite

 

TAB48XXX: Two groups of Baryte crystals, one of them forming a rosette aggregate of cream color and the other a fibrous-radial aggregate, possibly replacing a fossil shell and preserving its original structure, with the terminations being more whitish. They are on a matrix of very fine-grained clayey rock, whitish, completely covered by cream-colored Calcite crystals of a darker tone and lustrous, partially coating a botryoidal aggregate with another possible fossil shell.

Warden Bay is a coastal area known for its Eocene clay cliffs (London Clay Formation), rich in fossils and concretions. It is a classic locality for the occurrence of Baryte and Pyrite nodules and crystals, formed under reducing sedimentary conditions, often associated with organic remains.
