rarity, or significance as specimens from interesting locations, have been preserved as reference specimens in #MVM

DESMOND SACCO COLLECTION


Desmond Sacco is an authority on African as well as worldwide minerals. I met him many years ago at the Munich Show when it was still in the center of Munich and Desmond was one of the stars of the show, buying the best that appeared. His collection was legendary, not only because of the wonders we knew he would certainly have acquired given his position in the mines of the Kalahari Manganese Field (Hotazel, Wessels, N'Chwaning...) and his proximity to the legendary Tsumeb, but also because we saw what he was buying, and thus got an idea of the quality of his collection.

Many years and many mineral Munich shows have now passed and Desmond Sacco has decided to sell some specimens from his collection. We have been fortunate to acquire an important part of this material and with these we can make a virtual trip to the mines and minerals guided by Desmond and his collecting criteria. MV91AI5: Very well defined Beryl (aquamarine variety) crystals. They have excellent terminations, are transparent and bright, have a very well defined and uniform sky blue color and are on an Albite matrix with very bright Schorl crystals. Of high quality as is usual with samples from the Desmond Sacco collection.

MA16AI5: Fanlike growths of acicular Hydroxylapatite and Hemimorphite micro-crystals on Tarbuttite crystals, distinguishable by its green color. Of high quality, as is usual with samples from the Desmond Sacco collection.

MT88AK4: Very sharp Azurite crystals, deep blue in colour with bright reflections, partially covered by transparent to white Cerussite crystals forming cyclic twins, and accompanied by green microcrystals of Duftite. A classic Tsumeb specimen from the well-known Desmond Sacco collection.
The specimen has been reviewed, photographed and published in the magazine ‘Mineral Up’ on page 58 of the 2019/01 edition.

Tsumeb Mine is one of the world’s most renowned mineral localities. Geologically, it represents a polymetallic replacement deposit hosted by Proterozoic dolostones of the Otavi Group, formed by the interaction of metal-rich hydrothermal fluids with carbonate rocks. This setting produced an exceptionally complex orebody, celebrated for its remarkable mineralogical diversity, particularly secondary minerals of copper, lead, zinc, arsenic, and germanium, with many species first described from this classic locality.

MX16W1: Group of translucent and very bright crystals that combine the forms of a quite flattened rhombohedron and a very short prism. This combination creates an unexpected and curious shape, quite similar to a pyritohedron. The sample is from the Desmond Sacco collection, whose label we'll send to the buyer.

TF50AC2: Small crystals, very bright, formed by the prism and acute rhombohedral terminations. They selectively occupy the surfaces of some of the faces of the white Calcite rhombohedrons on the matrix.
