Peruvian Rhodonite

Among the most commented upon novelties at Tucson 2007 were Peruvian Rhodonites from the San Martín Mine. Although this mine was previously known for that species, more careful methods of extraction by the actual owners of the mine made it possible to obtain new samples of a high quality, especially if we consider their color, because previous Rhodonites were generally pinker than the best new ones, which are more red.
Our selection is based, precisely, on picking just the deep red specimens because we believe color is the most distinctive aspect, in terms of quality, of the Rhodonite.

TM6J8: Excellent miniature formed by groups of sharp, flat, prismatic crystals of exceptional transparency and color. The existence of a group of Quartz crystal adds esthetic force and mineralogical interest to the specimen.

TY64Q0: Group of flattened crystals of sharp, very well defined faces and edges and of very intense and uniform color and an excellent luster.

TQ52AD1: Divergent growths of flattened Rhodonite crystals that are bright, translucent but with some transparent terminations and with a very intense pink color. The crystals, more isolated than usual, are on Calcite matrix.

TX67L1: Flattened Rhodonite crystals, with a laminar habit, translucent and with excellent and very intense color. Small white Calcite crystals add a nice contrast.

ME90K6: Group of flattened Rhodonite crystals of excellent color and luster with growths of smallwhite crystals of Quartz. We especially note the intensity of the color, nearer to red most than pink, which is characteristic of the July-August 2007 samples.

TX96AM9: Divergent growths of flattened Rhodonite crystals, lustrous, translucent, with some transparent terminations and an intense color, with whitish zoning. The crystals are more isolated than usual in specimens from this provenance, and are on a Calcite matrix.

TX36I8: Group of flat prismatic crystals, very well-defined and bright and more isolated than usual for that mine. They form fans. We specially note its color, extraordinary even for the most usual from the locality. On adition there is a tabular Pyrrhotite crystal with sharp faces and edges. On the back of the sample there are small crystallizations of Sphalerite and Pyrite. Considering all the items it is a high level specimen.

TM63F5: The beautiful world of nature never ceases to surprise me. The combination of pink Rhodochrosite and the golden Pyrite on which it sits looks like some form of offering. With the extra features of bevelled edges and the light color zoning of the Rhodochrosite make, especially given its simplicity, this one even more beautiful.

TC96H7: Group of rhombohedral crystals of very well defined faces and edges and an excellent color. Notice the zonation of the color corresponding to different phases of growth, darker at the center of the crystal with alternating zones of different shades of pink nearer the edges. The group is on a matrix of small crystals of Quartz.

TG91AK2: A matrix piece of very sharp rhombohedral Rhodochrosite crystals with very distinct polycrystalline growths on the surface of the faces, lustrous and more vivid pink than usual in the specimens from this deposit. Outstanding, among the best found in this locality, both for its definition and its color. This piece was photographed and featured in the magazine "Le Règne Minéral", number 148, page 29 and by the Russian magazine ‘Mineral Observer’ on page 72 in the volume 24, number 3

TA97Y3: Groups of complex Sphalerite crystals that are translucent, have a honey color and are partially coated by small cuboctahedral Galena crystals. On matrix, with groups of rhombohedral Rhodochrosite crystals. Very elegant.

Santa Rita Mine

From the not so well known Santa Rita Mine come these Sphalerites of clear color and sharp crystals, well placed on a matrix covered by concretions of non pink Rhodochrosite. This mine also produces some high quality Galena.

TZ46H6: A group of twinned crystals with sharp faces and edges. They have orangish color and an excellent luster. Crystals are partially covered by concretions of Rhodochrosite. There is also some minor Galena on the matrix.

EK26N8: Complex crystals of deep honey color. Of a considerable size for the locality, they are on a matrix partially coated by Rhodochrosite.

TV86H6: Crystals have rounded shapes but they are formed by stepped planes with the faces of the cube and the octahedron and they are very sharp and bright. Between the crystals of Galena some groups of transparent crystals of Quartz appear.
