Áliva Sphalerite

Áliva, in the Picos de Europa, Cantabria, Spain is one of the classic worldwide localities. The best red Sphalerite in the world comes from here! The mines are now closed and there is no regular access to the galleries (especially as many of them are flooded)

ND11M3: Translucent Sphalerite crystal with tones clearer than usual with some curved faces other flattened ones. Faces are partially covered by Dolomite crystals.

TC9NYX: Polycrystalline growths of complex shapes, with well defined edges and faces, slightly curved, transparent, very lustrous and with a very deep and uniform honey-brown color, with small coatings of white rhombohedral Dolomite crystals. This piece comes from some small artisanal finds that were made in the mine after its closure. There is currently no access to the galleries.

NR12R9: A complex crystal with curvatures on its faces and edges. It is transparent and has an excellent deep honey color. The back side shows exfoliated surfaces.

NB14S0: Group of crystals with very well defined faces and edges, very bright, transparent, and its color is yellow with very well defined greenish shades. The color is very unusual and different from the more common yellow or orange on most of the samples from this locality.

NT13AB1: Complex crystal with curvatures on its faces and edges, twinned, with parallel growths, transparent, with an excellent deep honey color and partially coated by small white Dolomite crystals. From a Spanish mine, inaccessible for many of years, that is considered as a classic for the Sphalerite.

NBC96AQ0: Group of Sphalerite crystals with strange curvatures and deformations, between transparent and translucent, with brilliant luster and an intense and deep color, on a matrix of white rhombohedral Dolomite crystals with small coatings of Calcite.
The specimen comes from the Antonino Bueno collection, whose label we will send to the buyer.

NB7AM5: Polycrystalline growth of complex Sphalerite crystals with curvatures and with the smooth forms of the tetrahedron. The crystals, between transparent and translucent, have a very dense, deep and uniform caramel color.

JVM50AP8: Group of Sphalerite crystals with sharp crystal forms, ranging from translucent to transparent, with good luster and a very unusual green coloration for specimens from this locality.
It comes from the collection of Andrés Jiménez Shelly and was previously part of the collection of Carlos Prieto Paramio.

NRM66AO8: Group of very sharp Sphalerite crystals with very well defined crystal forms, between translucent and transparent, with good luster and an intense honey color. On matrix, with white scalenohedral Dolomite crystals.
The specimen comes from the collection of Santiago Jiménez who, especially in the 1980s and 90s, assembled an excellent collection with a very good representation of the mineralogy of northern Spain.

NR27AL5: Polycrystalline growth of Sphalerite with slightly curved edges and faces, transparent, very bright and with a very deep honey color, with dominant yellow and orange tones. On matrix, with white rhombohedral Dolomite crystals and Calcite crystal coatings.

TVM37ASN1: A floater crystal of Sphalerite with polycrystalline growths and complex twins of uniform toasted honey color with very marked reddish reflections. Very clean and with excellent transparency, accompanied by snow-white scalenohedral Calcite crystals in clear color contrast. The specimen, which is beautiful both in the front and the back, comes from the collection of Nacho Gaspar (number BLD-16), whose record will be sent to the buyer of the piece.

SV190NBF: Polycrystalline growth of complex Sphalerite crystals with curvatures and with smooth tetrahedron faces. They are translucent, with very bright luster and an intense honey color and with the uncommon peculiarity of being accompanied by a scalenohedral Calcite crystal and rhombohedral crystals of snow-white Dolomite.

NF46S0: Group of crystals with very well defined faces and edges and an area of parallel growth. They are very bright, transparent and have a deep orange color.

SV3180NXF: Antonino Bueno, one of the great field collectors in the Áliva area, had it in his collection, and although the crystals are rough, when you shine a little light behind it, the miracle appears!

The crystals, between transparent and translucent, have a dense, deep and uniform caramel color and grew on a matrix of sharp white Dolomite crystals. XM2580NTR: A floater that shows two main complex and interpenetrating spherical groups of Sphalerite, with well defined faces and edges. They are translucent, with marked polysynthetic twins and an intense honey color, and are joined at the base with Dolomite crystals as the matrix. A classic of Cantabrian mining from Las Mánforas, located in a spectacular setting next to the Picos de Europa National Park.
It belonged to Santiago Jiménez who, especially in the 1980s and 90s, assembled an excellent collection with a very good representation of the mineralogy of Northern Spain.

SV2640NTZ: Group of Sphalerite crystals, with complex crystallography and twinned, perfectly defined, of a very deep toasted honey color, transparent and implanted on a rock matrix, on Dolomite crystals of a snow-white color and small crystals of Calcite.
The specimen comes from the Antonino Bueno collection.

Áliva is a classic mining district of the Cantabrian Mountains, with hydrothermal mineralization in carbonate rocks, featuring high-quality Sphalerite associated with Dolomite, Calcite and Galena. In the realm of mineral collecting, Áliva is considered one of the most outstanding localities worldwide for Sphalerite.
