RD13M2: Doubly terminated Quartz (variety smoky)

Group of Quartz crystals, one of them dominant, doubly terminated and with very sharp faces and edges. Although its uniform smoky tones are not very deep, the transparency is excellent. In the Folch collection card one can read that this sample, collection Nr. 4.147, was obtained by exchange in 1950 with Herr Sulzbach from Zurich (Switzerland).

TXL91XXX: Quartz (variety smoky quartz)

Group of large prismatic smoky Quartz crystals, some of them doubly terminated, with well-defined terminations and a uniform smoky grey colour. The specimen is in excellent condition and shows minor limonite coatings at the base. The Caridad Mine is not one of the best-known workings in the Llano del Beal area, although it has occasionally produced interesting specimens such as this one. Geologically, the Caridad mining concession forms part of the Cartagena-La Unión mining district, where the mineralization is related to Miocene hydrothermal veins hosted by the metamorphic rocks of the Alpujárride Complex. The circulation of mineralizing fluids produced a rich sulfide paragenesis and, during later stages, the crystallization of Quartz in cavities and fractures. Alteration of the sulfides gave rise to iron oxides and hydroxides, responsible for the limonite coatings.

EM27AC0: Quartz (variety smoky quartz)

A novelty at the Ste. Marie-aux-Mines 2015 Show. Excellent example in which the two directions of the smoky Quartz crystals have been controlled epitactically by the feldspar upon which they grew. They resemble multiple Japan law twins but they are not twins. This phenomenon is seen on similar specimens from the Erongo Mountains, Namibia, as described by John White in an article in Rocks & Minerals, vol. 87, Sept./Oct. 2012, pp. 459-462, but this one has a related combo of small species, classics from Malawi.
