VK49Y5: Orpiment
Group of crystals on matrix with well-defined faces and edges, translucent, with a deep orange color and very intense luster. The crystals are remarkably well preserved despite the time that has passed since the specimen was recovered in 1978. Such specimens are now considered Peruvian classics. Quiruvilca Mine belongs to a polymetallic Andean district in northern Peru. Mineralization is related to Miocene Andean intrusions and developed as epithermal to mesothermal hydrothermal vein systems. The deposit is characterized by copper, lead and zinc sulfides, including abundant Pyrite, Sphalerite, Galena and Chalcopyrite, with secondary minerals and sulfosalts. Fluorite occurs in cavities and fractures related to late hydrothermal stages.
