Sphalerite crystals, on matrix, extraordinarily bright, twinned and sharp, of a deep black color and more isolated than usual for the locality of origin of the specimen. Accompanied by crystalline masses of Calcite, in strong color contrast, this piece is very representative for the deposit, in addition to having a considerable size.
Smallcleugh is a classic mine of the North Pennines Orefield, a major hydrothermal vein district with lead–zinc mineralization, well known for Galena and Sphalerite specimens, associated with Calcite, Ankerite and, more rarely, Quartz.
